International Trade Attorney

LOCATION: Michigan, Washington, D.C., or potentially remote

GENERAL PURPOSE: Butzel is seeking a highly skilled International Trade Attorney to join our team.  The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in corporate transactions with a focus on international trade matters including tariff classification, country of origin marking, customs valuation, free trade agreements and tariff preference programs under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA/NAFTA), counterfeits and border enforcement of IP rights, trade remedy duties, foreign acquisitions, antidumping and countervailing duties (AD/CVD), Section 301, as well as the export of controlled technologies.  This role requires proficiency with trade preference programs and trade remedy applications and offers the opportunity to advise clients on compliance with these programs.  The attorney will handle transactions involving controlled technologies, conduct legal research and analysis, draft and review legal documents, and represent clients in regulatory matters.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Advise clients on regulatory issues, manage compliance with U.S. trade regulations, and represent clients in other trade-related matters, primarily U.S. import and export control laws, tariff classification, customs valuation and compliance, trade remedies, free trade agreements, tariff preference programs, and other trade related matters.
  • Handle corporate transactions involving controlled technologies and international trade regulations.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support regulatory compliance.
  • Draft, review, finalize, and negotiate legal documents related to international trade and corporate transactions.
  • Represent clients in regulatory matters, including obtaining necessary licenses and approvals.
  • Stay updated on changes in international trade laws and advise clients on emerging regulatory challenges.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with trade preference programs and trade remedy applications, such as USMCA, AD/CVD, and Section 301.
  • Strong proficiency in international trade regulations and compliance issues.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to clients.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with internal and external contacts.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in navigating complex regulations such as ITAR, EAR, CFIUS, and OFAC Sanctions Programs is a plus.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR TRAINING:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • 10 years of experience in corporate transactions with a focus on international trade regulation.
  • Licensed and in good standing in Michigan or the Washington D.C. area.
