Butzel Long Of Counsel attorney honored by Michigan Press Association Foundation with establishment of the Dawn Hertz Freedom of Information Scholarship

Attorney also to be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Butzel Long Of Counsel attorney Dawn Phillips Hertz, was honored recently by The Michigan Press Association Foundation with the establishment of the Dawn Hertz Freedom of Information Scholarship. Ms. Hertz retired as General Counsel of the Michigan Press Association (MPA) after nearly 30 years.

Additionally, Ms. Hertz’s work with the MPA was recognized by U.S. Congress. U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra acknowledged Ms. Hertz and her devotion to the MPA. The honor is documented in the Congressional Record.

“I was really struck by how adored Dawn is by editors and reporters from across the state,” said Omar Chaudhary, a Butzel Long attorney who attended the MPA event. “They understand and appreciate her devotion to the cause of Freedom of Information.”

Ms. Hertz will receive another honor on April 18. She will be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing.

“It is very meaningful to be honored by both the Michigan Press Association and the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame,” said Ms. Hertz.

Based in Butzel Long’s Ann Arbor office, Ms. Hertz has specialized in First Amendment work, and has extensive experience counseling media clients. Ms. Hertz advises on matters of special interest to the media, and she has written a book for Michigan journalists, Michigan Media Law, with Wayne State Journalism Professor Ben Burns.

While Ms. Hertz has retired from active practice, she remains with Butzel Long for special projects.

Ms. Hertz is an experienced litigator and has defended the media, financial institutions, and private citizens in claims alleging libel, invasion of privacy and related claims. She also has extensive experience litigating cases under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act to obtain access to government.

Ms. Hertz lectures extensively on legal issues affecting the media and writes regular columns for the industry bulletin. She is a member of the Arts, Communications and Entertainment Committee of the State Bar of Michigan, the Communications Law Section of the American Bar Association, Inforum, Women in Communications and Society for Professional Journalists.

Ms. Hertz is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.A. 1968, J.D. 1971).
