Ira E. Hoffman discusses strategies for mitigating cyber risk
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ira E. Hoffman, an attorney based in Butzel Long’s Washington, D.C. office, will be a featured speaker during the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Annual Professional Development Conference on October 28, 2015 in Tysons Corner, VA.
Hoffman’s program is titled, “Mitigating Risk after Target, Sony & OPM: A Legal, Policy & Contractual Analysis.”
“With each successive disclosure of a major cyber-attack since Target, it has become clear that we are all at risk,” said Hoffman. “Meanwhile, our dependence on networks – and thus, our exposure to cyber-attacks – grows every day, with no end in sight.”
Hoffman will discuss three strategies for professional services providers to advise their clients on mitigating risk after cyber-attacks including:
- Using the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Framework and industry best practices as the standard for negligence;
- Inserting contract clauses to require vendors including cyber companies, to assume cyber risk; and
- Purchasing cost-effective cyber insurance.
At the same time, Hoffman will provide updates on new cyber security legislation and/ or court cases.
Hoffman focuses his practice on government contracts, international law, commercial litigation and cybersecurity law and policy. He has over 30 years’ experience in international contracting, and his cybersecurity practice focuses on liability for security breaches, M&A due diligence, government investigations, and strategies for mitigating cyber risk.
