Butzel Long elects shareholders

DETROIT, Mich. – Butzel Long has announced that four attorneys have been elected shareholders. James C. Adams is based in the firm’s Ann Arbor office Katherine (Katie) J. Donohue in the Detroit office Regina M. Alter and Edward Copeland are based in Butzel Long’s New York office. Mr. Adams recently rejoined Butzel Long. Ms. Donohue was an associate attorney with the firm. Ms. Alter was a non-equity shareholder and Mr. Copeland recently joined the firm.

James C. Adams
Mr. Adams practices in the area of real estate law. His substantial practice experience includes representation of developers, lenders, architects, construction contractors and construction managers, public and private corporations, municipalities and public agencies, in connection with all aspects of real estate, including: acquisition public and private financing tax incentives and other economic inducements affordable housing development condominium structuring and development, land use and zoning distressed project work-outs construction of municipal, commercial, and residential projects selling, leasing, and otherwise disposing of property and funding, construction, operation, and maintenance of urban transit systems.
He is listed in Best Lawyers in America, Michigan Super Lawyers, DBusiness Top Lawyers and Who’s Who In American Law. He is a past recipient of the Detroit Bar Association’s Distinguished Service Award.
Mr. Adams was a member of City of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s Emergency Turnaround Task Force. He currently serves as President of the City of Ann Arbor Economic Development Corporation, and on the Board of Trustees for the Legacy Land Conservancy. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Real Property and Probate Section) and the State Bar of Michigan (Real Property Law Section).
Mr. Adams is a 1974 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Law and a 1971 graduate of Michigan State University.
Regina M. Alter
Ms. Alter concentrates her practice and has extensive experience in the areas of complex commercial contract litigation, securities law, intellectual property, and employment law.
Ms. Alter represents individuals and companies in federal and state courts and in arbitration and mediation forums. Recent representative matters include: representing hedge funds in their claims to enforce anti-dilution adjustment and redemption provisions contained in stock warrants representing a former State Workers’ Compensation Fund against a major bank for breaches of contract and fiduciary duty arising from the bank’s management of a securities lending program successfully defended and settled breach of fiduciary duty and related claims against a trustee of a $100 million trust successfully prosecuted and settled claims enforcing restrictive covenants against former corporate employees successfully defended and settled breach of contract claims against a major company pertaining to a corporate acquisition and successfully defended and settled billing fraud claims brought by United Healthcare against a medical facility.
In addition, Ms. Alter has had multiple speaking engagements on the topic of the fiduciary duties of a Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Butzel Long, Ms. Alter was of counsel to Dreier LLP, and an associate with White and Case LLP and Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP. She is admitted to the bar in the State of New York and to the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of New York.
Ms. Alter is a graduate of The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 1996) where she served on the Cardozo Law Review. She also served as an Alexander Fellow, through which she performed a full-time externship with the Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin, S.D.N.Y. She earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science/International Relations, with minors in Art History and Russian, from New York University (B.A., cum laude, 1993) where she was a Founders' Day Honor Scholar. Ms. Alter is fluent in Russian and Hebrew.
Edward Copeland
Mr. Copeland concentrates his practice on employment matters, intellectual property law, media law, and complex litigation. He focuses on representing and counseling employers on matters relating to federal and state discrimination claims, wage and hour violations, ERISA violations, and privacy and security. He has experience in intellectual property matters, including trademark, copyright, trade secrets, and unfair competition.
He has also represented clients with technology law, media law and publishing matters, including libel, defamation, First Amendment, and other constitutional issues. Mr. Copeland has represented clients in complex financial litigation matters and in matters involving international law.
Mr. Copeland has been a member of the Board of Director for the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts since 2005. He also is a member of the Communications and Media Law Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He has served on various other association committees, including the Federal Courts Committee, the International Law Committee, the Environmental Law Committee, and the Land Use, Planning, and Zoning Committee. Mr. Copeland also is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Professional Liability Underwriting Society and the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
He has published numerous articles and often gives presentations on employment law and issues related to the media and intellectual property.
Mr. Copeland is a graduate of Clark University (B.A., 1975) in Worcester, MA, and of New York University School of Law (J.D., 1978, cum laude, Order of the Coif) where he was an Arthur Garfield Hays Fellow in Civil Liberties. He also attended Durham College at the University of Durham in England under the auspices of the Institute for European Studies d. Mr. Copeland is admitted to practice in New York the U.S. Supreme Court the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the First, Second, Fourth, and Ninth Circuits and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Katherine J. Donohue
Ms. Donohue concentrates her practice on employment, non-compete and trade secret litigation, traditional labor law, higher education law, and employment-related and e-discovery counseling. She is admitted to practice in the State of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals in the Sixth Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan.
In addition, Ms. Donohue is a member of the State Bar of Michigan. She is a member of the American Bar Association – Employment Rights and Responsibilities Section Member and Non-Compete/Trade Secret and Technology Subcommittee Member. She is active with the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
Ms. Donohue was named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2011 Class of “Up and Coming Lawyers.” She has published several articles on labor and employment matters and has been a featured speaker at conferences and webinars regarding technology in the workplace.
Ms. Donohue is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 2003), where she was a Jerome P. Cavanagh Scholar, a member of the Justice Frank Murphy Honor Society, a Symposium Editor on Law Review, and a Director on the Moot Court Board. She received the State Bar of Michigan Negligence Law Section Award for trial advocacy, the Frank Sengstock Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, and the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation Award for Outstanding Women Law Students. Ms. Donohue also is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.A., 2000, honors with distinction).
