Overview
Maya Smith focuses her practice on all aspects of U.S. and international trademark law. She has extensive experience in global trademark portfolio management, conducting clearance searches and rendering opinions, filing and prosecuting domestic and international trademark applications, and developing domain name strategies, including dispute resolution. Maya also advises clients on trademark monitoring and enforcement strategies, including preparing cease and desist letters and negotiating settlements. She assists with contract drafting, including, licensing, coexistence, and settlement agreements. Her practice extends to representing clients in Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) proceedings and litigation matters involving trademark and copyright disputes in federal and state courts. She also assists clients in resolving trademark and copyright infringement issues on social media platforms.
In addition to her trademark expertise, Maya has experience navigating compliance and enforcement matters, managing cyber risks, conducting breach investigations and responses, and advising on legal issues involving emerging technologies.
Maya earned her Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, where she was a member of the Black Law Student Association, the Sports and Entertainment Law Society, and served on the WMU Law Review. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Spelman College. Before attending law school, Maya worked as a Legislative Aide for the Georgia State Representative of the 62nd District. During her undergraduate years, she volunteered with Advocacy for Action as a case manager and served as the Georgia Executive Director of Operations for the Grl-Pwr Foundation.
