Diversity
Butzel Long is committed to servicing a diverse client base with a diverse legal team. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion foster an environment that promotes the collaboration and perspective necessary to effectively serve our clients and communities. We strive to create an environment that supports and promotes diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, genders, sexual orientation, and all other qualities that make us unique. We encourage our attorneys to participate in organizations that are dedicated to diversity in the legal profession and the sectors where our clients do business - and many of our attorneys are leaders in these organizations.
Diversity Committee
The DEI Committee is committed to promoting Butzel Long’s diversity, equity, and inclusion through initiatives including:
- Formal and informal training on issues relating to diversity, equity and inclusion and developing best practices and strategies for improving diversity within the firm and,
- Supporting the participation and involvement of our attorneys and staff in professional, social, community, and charitable organizations that encourage and promote diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
Recruiting
Butzel Long aggressively seeks candidates who fulfill today’s demands for a diverse workforce. We participate in a variety of activities designed to create a diverse environment. Minority job fairs and sponsorship of minority student and professional organizations, promotion and advancement of women, minority, and LGBTQ+ attorneys in the legal profession remain the cornerstone of our recruiting priorities.
Retention
The firm understands that diversity includes the retention of women, minority, and LGBTQ+ attorneys. The firm seeks to retain women, minority, and LGBTQ+ attorneys by fostering and maintaining a firm culture that supports and promotes diversity and equity. The firm ensures that all attorneys receive challenging work assignments and provides professional development and mentoring to attorneys to enhance their career development opportunities in firm leadership roles and assist them with client development and networking.
Social Responsibility
Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is the legacy of Butzel Long. Our attorneys have been part of landmark cases before state and federal courts addressing affirmative action (Gratz v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 244 and Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306 [2003]) as well as segregation (Milliken v. Bradley, 418 U.S. 717 [1974]).
We believe that being responsible and caring citizens of the world requires us to support the communities in which we live and work. Our commitment to our community extends beyond charitable donations and includes pro bono service to individuals and organizations in our cities, diversity and inclusion training for our clients, and a commitment to improving the communities where we thrive.
