Overview

Known for being highly driven and for the tenacious level of counsel he provides to his clients, Garett has successfully handled business and commercial litigation matters in state and federal courts throughout Michigan and in the southeastern United States. His experience includes representation of clients in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, construction, international trade, and others.

Garett enjoys the challenging nature inherent in representing clients in matters involving the administrative state and governmental regulation of private industry. He represents individuals and entities adverse to state administrative departments and relishes having the opportunity to assist clients facing bureaucratic, regulatory, and administrative obstacles.

In some instances, a lawsuit to address improper governmental action or regulation can involve bringing suit to protect an individual’s constitutional rights. Garett developed experience in this area of the law while defending such lawsuits for the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Garett’s time spent in that role provides him with a unique perspective when suing a government agency on behalf of a business or individual. He also represents clients whose constitutional rights have been violated by the state and/or federal government as it relates to professional or industrial licensing, property, business, and employment issues.

In addition to his commercial and business litigation practice, Garett provides counsel to political candidates on campaign matters and represents clients in election law litigation.

When it comes to counseling political candidates on election law and campaign matters, Garett provides committees, parties, and candidates with tactics to effectively resolve a variety of issues inherent to the political process—and to obtain the highest benefit out of opportunities that arise. His experience includes representation of candidates at the State Board of Canvassers, Bureau of Elections, Michigan Court of Appeals, and Michigan Supreme Court. He represents candidates for the state legislature, the United States Congress, and statewide candidates for state and federal offices. Garett has been referenced in articles published in various news syndications regarding his representation of clients in the political realm.

Garett also represents clients in high-profile criminal matters that involve a political office or political entities. Garett handles all stages of the investigative process, working with prosecutors and law enforcement personnel to obtain the best possible outcome for his clients.

To name just a few of Garett’s recent victories, he has achieved successful results for a Michigan company in an international intellectual property dispute, obtained favorable resolution for breach of contract/unjust enrichment claims for a manufacturing client, advantageously resolved non-compete and non-solicitation agreements for a client in the construction industry, among others.

Garett is a Shareholder located in the firm's Lansing office. He has been recognized for his work in Commercial Litigation and for his ambition and accomplishments by respected legal industry publications. His litigation experience includes service as an assistant attorney general for the state of Michigan and as a chief assistant prosecutor for Clinton County, Michigan.

Prior to his legal career, he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps (2002 to 2007). Garett is a graduate of The Military College of South Carolina (“The Citadel”) and Michigan State University College of Law.
